The faithful replica of Columbus’s flagship will be open for public tours from May 16th to 19 th at Charlestown Harbour
May 15, 2026.- The Nao Santa María, a historical replica of the flagship used by Christopher Columbus during his 1492 voyage, is arriving in Charlestown for the first time. It will be docked at Charlestown Harbour, where it will be open to the public for visits from May 16th to 19th.
This visit marks a significant milestone, as it is one of the ship’s calls in England during its extensive 2026 European tour, which includes stops in the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany.
The Nao Santa María is more than just a ship; it is a floating museum and a proud ambassador of the maritime and cultural heritage of the Province of Huelva (Spain). It represents the great historical oceanic expeditions led by Spanish sailors that changed the course of history.
The vessel was built in 2018 by the Fundacion Nao Victoria to commemorate the 525th Anniversary of the Encounter between Two Worlds. Master shipwrights constructed the 200-ton vessel in Punta Umbría (Huelva – Spain) using iroko and pine wood, strictly adhering to historical records to ensure every detail reflects the original 15th-century ship. A ship that undertakes great national and international voyages, sailing thousands of nautical miles every year. It visits dozens of cities every year where it opens its decks to the public.
The Onboard Experience:
During its stay in Charlestown, the Nao Santa María will open its decks to visitors of all ages, allowing them to explore the ship’s interior, discover life on board in the 15th century and learn about the details of the greatest nautical feat ever achieved—a unique cultural and educational experience that transports visitors back to the era of the great navigators.
